JUNIORS at Royston Golf Club have been celebrating a remarkable victory in the final qualifying games of the CAGU junior league.

Needing a large victory, they trounced Links Golf Club 6-0 and qualified for the final in September, where they will once again be defending their title.

The team consisted of Oli Bance, Chris and Tom Trimble, James Sandford, Michael Clapham, and James Smith.

Chris Trimble won the prestigious Gog Magog Junior Open. The four-handicapper shot rounds of 71 and 72, to finish three over par and six shots ahead of his nearest challenger.

John Middlemass emerged victorious in the Junior 36-hole challenge. The 28-handicapper shot rounds of 65 and 64 to record a one stroke victory over Henry James.

County under-16 player Michael Clapham was third on 135.

Gary Hammond won the Royal British Legion Charity Stableford. His 42 points saw his handicap slashed to 13, but he won by only a point from junior Andrew Brooker, who has reduced his handicap from 46 to 21 in just eight months.

The Ladies August Medal was won by Kathy Musgrave with a scintillating nett 67. The 17-handicapper played some remarkable golf on the back nine to be home in 38, just four over par, and all despite a double bogey on the11th and 17th holes.

Jenny Thompson was runner-up on 71, with Mary Mitchell and Paula Offer third on 73.

Meanwhile, Eric Baker, Adrian Shoebridge and Steve De Fraine led the qualifying for the Presidents Cup on Sunday.

Their nett 65s were one shot ahead of Dan Keogh. The other qualifiers for the final, to be played this week were, Oli Bance, John Kelly and Chris Trimble.
