SUNDAY evening saw the Royston Top Club team take on a strong away team at Garston.

From the start the Royston 11 were under pressure to keep in touch with the relentless good bowling of Garston.

As the game progressed, Garston pulled off a win in the two-bowl singles and the four-bowl singles, which was followed by another win in the fours.

The only Royston win was in the triples, and they suffered a heavy overall defeat.

Royston Vets were in action last Monday against the North Herts Vets in an afternoon home game of five rinks of mixed triples.

A fairly close game saw Royston win 90-80.

Two County Fours competitions were also played last Monday, with Royston facing neighbours Baldock.

The Royston team of Eddie Collins, Will Martin, Peter Graves, and Colin Wilson, were ahead by three shots on the 13th end, but a late surge by Baldock, skipped by J. Crosby, earned them a 20-14 win.

The other Royston team of Mike Randall, Charles Gifford, George Lewis, and Rodney Dean, were away to Letchworth Conservatives.

The Royston team had a slow start, but managed to pull back some lost ground in the latter stages, and went down 23-12.

Last Tuesday saw County Triples at Royston, and the hosts team of Eddie Collins, Will Martin, and Colin Wilson, coasted home to a 22-12 win over Letchworth Garden City.

On rink two Brian Pepper, George Lewis and Rodney Dean give a solid performance to beat their Whitethorn (Letchworth) opponents, 15-9.

Royston continue to be successful in the Meldreth and District League, with another win at Meldreth on the evening of June 6. They gained a maximum seven points by beating Meldreth 78-59.

Four rinks of the Vets mixed triples took to the green to play a game against Baldock Vets.

Both teams managed a win on two rinks, but Baldock won the day 76-60.

With hardly any time to draw their breath, the Royston team took on Melbourn in another Meldreth and District League game on Thursday.

Playing away, they still managed to gain six points of the seven available with a 78-55 victory.

On the evening of Friday Royston played Norton BC (Letchworth) in the McMullen Trophy.

The format for this competition is three rinks of 4's. This was a very tight game from the beginning, with only a few shots separating the two teams at any time.

On the 18th end Royston were just six shots ahead. Over the next two ends rink three dropped eight shots, which put Royston in a very precarious position.

On the last end (21) Royston were only two shots up. Rink one dropped a shot, Rink two gained one shot, leaving the game resting on rink three.

At this point Royston were looking defeat in the face, as they were four shots adrift with only their skips last bowl left to rescue the situation.

Fortunately for Royston, the Norton Skip on this rink, had not realised that Norton were now in a winning position, and bowled his last bowl which was on a tight line and of a running weight.

His bowl took the jack from the counting Norton bowls and presented it to a Royston bowl a yard or so away, leaving both bowls resting on the jack, which meant that neither team scored.

It was a narrow escape for Royston who won by just two shots, 59-57.

The week was rounded off by a four-rink friendly played away at Willian on Saturday.

All participants had an enjoyable afternoon, but Willian had the upper hand on the day, and beat Royston, 79-64.
