HARINGEY BOROUGH 1

PAUL Attfield's team gained a second victory in a week against higher status opposition.

There were many changes from the side that started Tuesday's game at St Ives, but what is becoming evident is that Town will start this season's campaign with a strong squad.

Town again had to play on their second pitch because of ongoing maintenance work on their main surface.

The game was always played at a high tempo and was a thorough workout for both teams.

The home side started the better and within the first 10 minutes Conor De Lacy had a close-range header cleared off the line and Ashley Townsend broke the offside trap but was thwarted by the agile visiting keeper.

The visitors also had a good deal of possession and were a particular threat down the left, with some quick and tricky play that Town did well to shut down.

After 25 minutes, Jan Stephens also broke a flimsy offside trap and the visitors again were in debt to their keeper who blocked with his legs.

But the reprieve was short-lived, with Town taking the lead three minutes later.

Alec Thomas lofted a neat ball over the visiting centre half to the well-timed run from Townsend, who drilled a half-volley into the net.

Haringey reacted well and were a particular threat from set plays. They went close with a couple of close-range headers that should have tested Damion Williamson's goal before they equalised three minutes before the break.

Town were caught flat-footed at the back as a simple ball to the front line found a forward, who turned and hit a sweet 18-yarder past Williamson.

The second half was a more stretched game with both teams getting plenty of possession to create chances but both defences worked hard.

Eleven minutes into the second half, Haringey hit a post following a corner but Town got stronger as the game went on and always looked likely to create the better chances.

Thomas and De Lacy both narrowly missed the target and David Cain glanced a Stephens corner just wide before Cain scored what proved the winning goal with six minutes left when he rose unmarked to head home another Stephens corner
