Kellie Lucken was star of the show for JM Judokwai as six of their members competed at the Hertfordshire Schools Judo Association Championships in Berkhamstead on Sunday.

Lucken used both throwing and holding techniques to also gain four straight Ippon winning bouts in her charge to the gold medal.

Kristofer Francombe also collected gold in the 8-10 years under-38 kilo section, with five quick-fire Ippon winning bouts, drawing praise from national referee Llewellyn Kerr.

"I have never refereed a final of this calibre where the call to start the contest and the call to end the contest were virtually in the same breath," he said.

Francombe used a variety of ankle, hip and shoulder techniques to win in devastating fashion, especially against Noel Gallaway, who seemingly towered over the Cambourne youngster.

Emma Reid also collected gold in her class. Like Francombe, she won with four solid Ippon victories using combination and counter techniques to great effect in an almagamated weight category.

"Emma is one whose understanding of combining throwing skills with ground holding skills stands her in good stead in these conditions," said JM club coach John Massmann.

"Regularly at club sessions she is seen alternating her ground holds to practise and improve their effectiveness".

The success continued for the Royston Club as Leah Patel, who recently transferred from the famed Shinto Club in Enfield, started her J Mcareer with an opening Ippon win in the 11 - 13 years under 48 kilo, ensuring that she was rewarded with a bronze medal for her efforts.

Thomas Raymen and Charles Slade also put up good performances in the 8-10 year-old 27-kilo section without collecting medals.
