Buntingford Town 1 Whitewebbs 0 TOWN recorded a sixth successive league victory - and a second win in four weeks over leaders Whitewebbs. Saturday's result pushed Paul Attfield's team into third spot in the Herts County League Premier Division. Whitewebbs, who went into the game with a 19-point advantage over second-placed Codicote, started at a brisk pace. Town matched their opposite number man-to-man with both teams playing some good football. The home side took a more direct approach to their normal patient game. But with the pace of Carl Smith and Robbie Wilmott up front, this pairing and tactical approach turned out to be the instrumental factors of the game as the strike duo caused persistent problems to the visiting defensive unit. Defensively, Town had to be at their best with Whitewebbs having plenty of possession. Despite a number of teasing corners, Town's defensive organisation and strength kept their opponents' chances to a premium. The visitors should have taken the lead when a corner eluded everyone except the league's leading scorer Michael Jarrett but his header from eight yards went wide. Town's teenage centre-half Jamie Babbage was then instrumental in playing the prolific striker out of the game with an efficient, committed performance. Both Robbie Wilmott and Carl Smith had early chances just off target before Smith ran through on goal after 19 minutes. The clear trip from behind in the area went unpunished by referee Dave Rock with Smith having to leave for prolonged treatment. Wilmott then ran through on goal from a Lee Ridings pass but an excellent recovery tackle from the centre-half dealt with the danger. However, 16-year-old striker Wilmott scored the deciding goal after 26 minutes when he advanced on to Barry Lynch's long ball to send a deft 25-yard lob over the stranded Alan Buck and into the net. This stung the visitors into action and Damion Williamson made a fine diving save to his left to block a 12-yard drive but Town continued to press and the remaining minutes of the half turned out to be an end-to-end affair. Whitewebbs had the better of the earlier exchanges in the second half with Town a little panicky on the ball when defending. After 51 minutes, Jarrett found space eight yards out after a neat turn and only a superb diving block by Jamie Babbage prevented the equaliser. In the 63rd minute, another clear chance for Brian Hughes 10 yards from goal after a long diagonal ball caught Town napping was inexplicably ballooned over with only Williamson to beat. This miss turned out to be the turning point of the half as Whitewebbs created little, and throwing players forward meant Town were able to find more space when attacking. There was a slight scare when Barry Lynch looked to have felled Hughes in the area but referee Rock again turned down prolonged appeals, with the visitors becoming increasingly desperate and frustrated. Town had good chances late on to seal the game. After 82 minutes, Carl Smith dispossessed a hesitant defender and squared for Wilmott, who rounded Buck, but his goalbound effort was scrambled off the line by a diving defender for a corner. With the referee adding a surprising seven minutes injury time it was Wilmott who contrived to have the final word. His pace and skill took on two defenders and, after advancing in the area, was clearly pulled back with the referee finally awarding a penalty. Carl Smith's well-placed penalty, though, was superbly saved by Buck diving to his left, but there was no time left for Whitewebbs to mount another attack.
