TOWN moved a step closer the Herts County League championship on Saturday with a dominant performance against Elliott Star.

From the very start Town had a steely determination in their game and some of the team's passing football that was played was just far too good for their spirited opposition.

Chances were created from the offset with Town quickly piling on early pressure.

In the first five minutes Will Turl headed over whilst unmarked from a Luke Robins corner and Mark Smith volleyed a neat move over from 18 yards when completely free at the edge of the area.

The visitors never looked comfortable with Town's collective work rate and when Mark Wright pressurised some hesitant defending to intercept and ram a 12 yard angled drive into the top left corner in the ninth minute there was only to be one outcome.

Town were a particular threat out wide all game with Malins and Robins causing constant problems and with Lewis Endacott and Dean Chaffey always looking to get forward from full back positions they had plenty of opportunities to deliver balls into the box as well.

It was from one such cross in the 20th minute from Endacott that Town added their second goal when his right wing ball deceived visiting keeper Adam Warner and found the far corner for his first senior goal of the season.

Luke Robins then headed against a post from another Endacott cross before captain Mark Smith added his first senior goal of the campaign finding the top corner with a sweet 20 yard volley in the 30th minute.

Star's only real chance of the game arrived on 33 minutes when a forward headed a corner onto the top of Town's crossbar but keeper Damion Williamson was from then on a virtual spectator as Town hit a ruthless second-half spell with four goals in 16 minutes.

Defender Jamie Babbage became the third Town player on the day to open their season account adding his teams fourth striking home a loose ball in the area on 47 minutes.

Three minutes later Chris Hardy headed in a right wing cross to make it five and Hardy added his second and Town's sixth on 59 minutes converting an excellent team move with a close range tap in.

Substitute Ricky Young made it 7-0, and the biggest surprise of the day was then how Town never added to their tally until the final minute with an abundance of chances either being carelessly missed or excellently saved by the completely overworked Warner.

Most Town players had the opportunity to increase the tally but it was left to Tom Malins to complete the scoring in the last minute with a fine angled half volley giving the keeper no chance.

Boss Paul Attfield said: "The way we approached and played the game was tremendous. The hot conditions were tricky but we played at a very effective tempo and some of the team football we played, especially in the second half when we could have taken a foot off the gas, was very entertaining.

"Goal difference could be a big factor at the end, so to score eight was pleasing as was the fact we were able to get seven different scorers on the score sheet."
