In un-winter like spring weather, the finals of the Heydon Grange Winter Mixed Pairs and Men's Singles Knockouts were played last Sunday over the Essex and Cambs courses.

The holders of the Mixed Pairs, Steve Miller and Roz McKenzie went down 4 and 3 to the previous year's winners Malcolm Knobel-Forbes and Tina Broadley.

The current holder of the singles title, David Jolley, retained his trophy with a 4 and 3 win over Clive Barrett.

For David Jolley, it was the second trophy of the weekend. With his partner, Bruce Kempton, David lifted the Barn Trophy on Saturday with a better ball points score of 39 against a strong field. The weather conditions were appalling and high scores eluded most golfers. The runners up Martin Waring and Peter Hill scored a creditable 37 points.

- Phil Martin won the Rotary Charity Shield at Royston Golf Club on Saturday.

Playing in cold, damp conditions the 13 handicapper, returned an incredible 44 stableford points for a comfortable five point margin.

His round of five over par has seen his handicap tumble by two shots. Runner-up was Arthur Brennan, who matched Martin's outward nine of 24 points, but could only manage 15 on the back nine.

Jenny Thompson won the ladies section with a credible 34 points, to secure her first victory at the club. Karen Pearson, was again in the running, but finished a point behind Thompson to take second place.

The Men's Fourball Betterball Medal, played in better conditions on Sunday, was won by Charlie Winter and Darren Dawson with a nett 63.

The pair cogged together well, but only just beat the field with two pairs returning 64's. Graham Toby and Mick Joyner took second spot ahead of Ian Coath and Chris Little on countback.

Many of the juniors from the club and the Sean Clark Junior Academy will be taking part in the HSBC Wee Wonders competition in May and he hopes that some of them will qualify for the regional finals: "It is a great competition for juniors between the ages of five and 12, with all abilities catered for."

Entry forms are available from the pro shop at Royston or on www.hsbcweewonders.com.

- Dan Keogh won the April Medal at Royston on Sunday. The 13 handicapper returned a nett score of 67, three under his handicap, to finish the only player under par.

Second place in Division Two went to Mial Walker with Trevor Deards taking third. Richard Howorth won Division One and the best gross with a nett 70.

The six handicapper just piped the trio of Tom Trimble, Tony Hannington and Mick Merry. Trimble took second place on countback to continue his good run of form.

The 15-year old played superbly in the Herts Schools Golf Association's Rosebowl at Harpenden Common last week.

His gross score of four over par was an excellent effort and has helped to see his handicap tumble four shot to seven this year.

- Gavin Williams achieved his first hole-in-one recently after 46 years of trying. Playing with the president he holed out on the sixth with a six iron.

- March winds blew across the Heydon Grange Essex and Cambs courses last Saturday. There was a touch of spring in the air however, as the sun shone brightly on the Ladies Spring Pairs competition.

Unlike a normal pairs competition, the pairs are only drawn after the players have completed their rounds.

While the Best Front Nine was won by Heather Neil with 19 points and the Best Back Nine by Sue Slater with 18 points, the overall winners drawn at random were Tina Broadley and Ellie Brown with a combined score of 59 points.

Runners up were Sue Slater and Jean Black with a points total of 54. Lady captain Daphne Borham presented the trophy to the winning pair.
