ROYSTON travelled to Luton for their second league game with a changed side due to injuries, the critical ones the loss of John Sussex in defence and Paul Bloomfield in attack.

It was clear from the start that Vauxhall had loaded their side with three first team players and had a squad of 15 against Royston's 11.

It took 10 minutes for Vauxhall to open their campaign with a well-worked goal from open play, feeding the ball across the Royston defence before driving round the back and passing to their forwards in open play.

It was to be the pattern of the game, as Vauxhall continued the pressure they scored a second.

Vauxhall were quicker to the ball and had more pace, every time Royston closed down an attack and moved forward possession was conceded too easily and Vauxhall would come straight back into the attack.

It continued in the second half as Vauxhall punished Royston with five more goals, from a mix of open play and converting one of their many penalty corners.

Typically Royston never gave up and in the last five minutes, from a free hit on the right Colin Smith struck a through ball to Michael Welding who did his usual run round the defence to the waiting Colin Bateman on the far post, roofing the ball high into the net to gain some satisfaction from a tough game.
