JAMES Sandford led the way in a busy week of events at Royston Golf Club. Sandford won the Junior Stableford with 42 points, seven ahead of Thomas Clapham. He is part of the county squads coached by Sean Clark at Royston and the 13-year-old has seen his handicap reduced from 28 to 15 over the past year. The juniors also held a team event earlier in the week, which was won by Greg Fyson, Stacey Homer and Chris Trimble with 77 points. In second place were Matthew Barrett, Thomas and Michael Clapham with 72 points. The ladies' February Stableford was won by Bridget Long, closely followed by Mary Mitchell. On Saturday, Joanne Hilliard secured first place on countback from Janice Abrahams on 33 points. Chris Taylor won the men's Thursday medal with a net 71. Runner-up was former captain John Fenton with a 73. The men's medal, on Saturday, was played in glorious conditions, but only one player managed to break par and the in-form Gary Hainsworth secured first spot with a net 69 from his four handicap. Former England schoolboy international Mark Rogers finished second with a net 70 off a one handicap. In a tense match, the club pipped the Cambridge University Stymies team by 51/2 matches to 41/2. With several of the promising Royston juniors in the team as well as some more experienced players, Marcus Shipley finished his debut with two victories. With the back nine playing into a northeasterly wind, John Ellis and Peter Prentice won the four-ball better ball Stableford, on Sunday, with 43 points, knocking Jason Nolan and Nick Lloyd into second spot on the countback rule. Mark Pearson and Mike Phizacklea were third with 42.
