AN 89th minute winner from Ian Frances knocked high-flying Gamlingay United from the top of the BIS League Division 2A.

Melbourn trailed 2-0 within 20 minutes, and showed all their character to fight back and claim the three points, with Kris Watters and Jon Patman seeing their early chances go begging.

Keeper Glenn Pearse kept Melbourn in the hunt with a brilliant diving save.

Then after 35 minutes, Melbourn pulled one back when Watters slotted home a confident penalty after he was brought down in the box.

In the second half, Melbourn looked a different side as they began to dominate the early possession, and they were rewarded with an equaliser when Steve Marriott fired a vicious half-volley into the roof of the net.

Then Stuart Collen, making a rare appearance in the opposition's half, rolled the ball home to send Melbourn into a deserved lead.

The hosts' defence was expertly marshalled by Ash Bryan, despite the initial early setback.

However, they were caught napping, with substitute Lionel Griffin pulling down a Gamlingay striker in the box, with the score all square after the resulting kick with just seven minutes left.

Melbourn thought they had nabbed a late winner when Watters popped up again with a calm left-footed strike, only to see the assistant referee flag for offside.

However, with less than a minute left, Melbourn's determination was rewarded when Frances' low drive flew into the back of the Gamlingay net, as the hosts claimed all three points.
