A PATIENT and controlled knock of 88 by Lawrence Huxley saw Girton to a challenging total of 191-9, and ultimately victory over Ashwell by a margin of 70 runs on Saturday.

Huxley opened the batting and was not dismissed until the 44th over, when he was the eighth man out, caught and bowled by Tim Moynihan (1-43).

Earlier on in the day, Ashwell had bowled and fielded well to restrict the league-leaders’ total. Graham Scott cleaned up Girton’s middle order in taking 4 wickets for just 36 runs – including a fine one-handed reflex catch at slip by Gary Simmons.

Simmons ended with impressive figures of 3-48, but unfortunately – and not for the first time this season, Ashwell couldn’t press the advantage home. Girton were stuttering at 88-5, but managed to recover through Huxley and reached 191-9.

In reply, Ashwell’s batsmen struggled against the accuracy of Girton’s Matt Hobbs (1-8). Tom Wallace, Tim Moynihan and Jonathan Merrell were all back in the hutch before the score had reached 30, and despite a rearguard action from Gary Simmons who made 68, Ashwell were losing too many wickets.

When Simmons was caught on the long-on boundary, the score was 118-7, and with him went any realistic hope of an Ashwell victory. Huxley (1-23) took the final wicket to leave Ashwell all out for 121.
