GRENEWAY'S Year 7 basketball team impressed in their first competitive game with a resounding 69-34 win over a strong Barnwell side.

In was the youngsters' first taste of the North Herts Schools' Basketball League, and like the other Greneway teams, the under-12s got off to a flying start.

Up against a bigger and more physical Barnwell side, the Greneway players did not get intimidated and scored a number of skilful and well-worked first period baskets.

They went into the second period leading 10-4, and hit the floor with a vengeance, their fast moving and team basketball proving impossible to stop for their Stevenage opponents.

And as a result they finished the quarter in complete control, having built up a 36-12 lead.

The third quarter was a more even affair, with the action closely balanced.

However, the Greneway players made life increasingly difficult for the visitors with their superior offensive skills showing once more as they finished the period 54-22 ahead.

The final quarter gave Greneway a chance to relax, with the winning points seemingly in the bag.

They passed the ball around superbly and made a number of great baskets.

And when the final buzzer went, the hosts celebrated their league debut which not only impressed but showed there is more to come.

Anthony Lane and Guy Curtis impressed at the hoop, with 12 and 10 points respectively, while Callum Turner made nine offensive rebounds and nine defensive rebounds.

Megan Pinner and vice captain Eleanor Bishop made four steals each, with captain Fergus Campbell making three blocks and two assists.

Megan Kaba led the way with the assists however, with an impressive five.

Greneway Squad: Kaba, Pinner, Lane, Bishop, Carpenter, Cooper, Brain, Bailey, Curtis, Campbell, Turner, Bunker, Gibson, Sames, Marriott.
