GRENEWAY racked up their 300th basketball win in all competitions when their year 7s beat Highfield School from Letchworth in the North Herts Schools' Basketball under-12s League.
Both teams were nervous and full of energy and this was evident throughout the first three minutes as calm basketball was not on show.
Gradually Greneway's players began to exert some control and showed their superior finishing skills.
Allied to this the hosts were playing some impressive team defence that made every pass difficult for the visitors.
The second quarter was a much more even period in terms of baskets scored but both teams showed signs of developing into good basketball players and teams. The scoreline did not reflect the skills on show, with the defensive skills particularly dominant.
After the interval Greneway were able to extend their 24-4 lead with some lovely passing, team basketball.
All the players made telling contributions in the quarter and this made it consistently difficult for Highfield to score.
The final period saw Highfield increase the tempo in a valiant attempt to close the gap but the superior ball possession and finishing skills of the Greneway players meant the hosts were always in control and were comfortable winners.
With one minute left Greneway were able to ease off and they closed out their first competitive win against a strong and resilient Highfield School.
Terry Graves, head of PE, said: "This win was also the school's 300th competitive basketball league win in 15 years - a fantastic record.
