Greneway U13s 30 Edwinstree U13s 15

GRENEWAY SCHOOL’S Year 7 and 8 rugby team have won the North Herts Schools rugby title after a 30-15 triumph over Edwinstree.

After a tightly contested game last year both teams knew they would have to be at their best to emerge victorious and set up a tie with the winners of the Stevenage and North Herts competition.

It was Edwinstree who started confidently with a number of bursts from their backs only to be stopped in their tracks from a series of strong tackles from Sam Williams, Tom Gambell, Rhys Redrup and Callum Pinner.

Greneway turned the tables and it was Matt Moore at scrum-half pulling the strings and feeding Gus Rees and Ed Shannon enabling them to break through the Edwinstree back line which led to the first try of the game.

Ed Shannon scored the next try after superbly bursting past three tackles to place the ball down. The third try followed closely behind to put Greneway in a 15-0 lead at the half way stage.

Edwinstree showed great spirit of their own and were able to produce the first try of the second half.

After a number of big tackles from both sides Robbie Ponting seized on a loose ball after some brave work from Ethan Lewis to restore the three try lead. Edwinstree came back immediately with a well worked try to make the game 20-10.

Greneway were able to call on their subs Ben Watson and Joseph Simmons to rejuvenate the side and this enabled them to again find the try line. With the game poised at 25-15, the next try was crucial. Nathan King, who was again showing his ability to read the game well, made a crucial interception to set up another try scoring attack.
