Greneway School organised their 10th annual tag rugby festival for 150 Year 3 and 4 pupils from Icknield Walk, Reed and Studlands Rise First schools.

Assistant headteacher Terry Graves, school sport co-ordinator, Rob Dowler, and teachers/coaches from the First School took the reins as part of the North East Herts School Sport Partnership.

The programme was then expertly managed and led by Greneway’s Year 8 Young Sports Leaders.

The event was enjoyable and effective learning experience for all concerned.

The festival was part of the Year 8’s Young Sports Leaders programme – a superb, nationally recognised qualification.

Tag rugby is a fast-moving, non-contact evasion game suitable for boys and girls to play together.

Its safe, non-contact nature, combined with the fun and vibrance of the sport, has meant that mini tag is now one of the RFU’s official version of rugby for U9s.

The interchangeable nature of possession, leading to rapid switching from attack to defence, means that a range of skills is cultivated and developed.

Co-operation, integration and determination, along with individual and collective responsibility, are all key elements in the game of mini tag.

All the children participated in organised coaching sessions where enjoyment, teamwork and skill development through rugby were the key objectives. All were achieved as a thoroughly enjoyable festival was experienced.

Each participating school and every player received a special commemorative participation certificate and these were presented by the Sports Leaders and SSCOs.
