ATHLETES from Greneway School competed in the Hertfordshire Schools’ Athletics Champonships on Saturday.

The winners in the older age groups had the chance to represent Hertfordshire in the English Schools’ Championships in July.

This was definitely a step up in class for the Royston athletes who have been excelling at district level this season and had to achieve the exacting county standards for their respective events.

In an action-packed day the athletes bought back to Royston an impressive five-medal haul, a new school record and many new PBs.

Greneway’s Justin Leavers won two Silvers, the first was in the under-13 boys 200m and the second, an hour later, in the Boys Long Jump where he smashed his PB.

In the 1500m, Gus Rees ran a new Greneway Year 7 record of 4.59.08, almost five seconds faster than the previous record and this superb run earned him a bronze medal. He then threw a massive Javelin PB to win a Silver medal in the afternoon. Sophie Shannon was the other Greneway medalist, as she ran a season’s best time in the 100m to win a bronze. Callum Pinner made the county finals for his performance in the under-13 70m hurdles.

Other athletes were Christy Stubbs in the under-13 Girls 800m and Discus, Roberto Thomas in the under-17 boys triple jump and 800m, Neil Addison in the under-17 high jump and Amber Rivers in the girls under-15 75m Hurdles.

Terry Graves, Assistant Headteacher, was delighted to see the young athletes continue to raise their level of performance.

He said: “To even qualify for these championships is a superb achievement in the first place. But to then win medals and/or achieve new PBs or records is fantastic.

“All the athletes should be proud of their achievements as they have once again shown the talent that exists in all the Royston schools. This should spur them on to work for the next level.”
