ROYSTON Vets rounded off their season with a comfortable home victory against newly-formed Cambourne, on Saturday.

The game saw the retirement of Royston player Ted Greaves - who played alongside his sons Steve and Paul - and referee Jack Smith, and there proved to be a feast of tries with 10 scored.

Cambourne never gave up and tried to play until the final whistle and were eventually rewarded with a well-worked converted try.

Royston also welcomed back a number of players out of retirement for this game and it was Peter Robinson, the first Vets captain, some 10 years ago that opened the scoring.

Combining well with his back row colleagues, Robinson leapt over the line within minutes of the start.

The hosts, with many players in the squad looking to get a few minutes on the pitch before the end of the season, were just too good for Cambourne.

Their front row cleaned up the scrums and in the final period these needed to go uncontested to keep the match alive.

Royston, with so much procession, ran the ball with ease and the backs were soon on the scoresheet.

Winger Neil Smith showed a clean pair of heels to his opposite number and grabbed two tries early on before being substituted and then Steve Clay charged over.

The forwards, not to be out done, were also clocking up the points. Captain Steve Luckman, playing his last game, went out with a bang. His crunching tackles and charging runs got him on the score sheet early on and he was soon followed by Paul Rabbets and Tony Richardson, who scored a fine pair.

Steve Greaves played with style and it is a shame he cannot play more often. In the second half he began to open up and from one restart he collected the ball and ran the length of the pitch, only to see the final pass go to ground.

He was not disappointed though, as a combination pass with his brother Paul, saw him also on the score sheet.

Ted Greaves was also nearly there, but front rower Tim Boyce was not going to let the season go without a try, as he scored in the final minutes of the game. Colin Letch and Mark Lisher were also scoring the points by converting the many tries as Royston rounded off the season in style.
