GRENEWAY'S Year 8 basketballers started their league campaign with an emphatic performance against a well-drilled Highfield School.

The hosts played intense man-to-man defence from the start and the visitors found this very difficult to deal with.

Greneway used their team defence as a springboard for a very effective fast break that resulted in a 26 - 10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second period continued in the same vein with intense pressure defence and good passing and movement with the ball as Greneway continued to dominate all phases to lead 47 - 23 at the interval.

The third quarter saw Greneway ease off the pressure to a half-court man-to-man defence.

This resulted in a more even, end-to-end period of play with both teams able to show their offensive skills. The period ended 75-40.

The final quarter was the most evenly matched of the whole game as Greneway cruised and Highfield increased their tempo further.

Both teams displayed some impressive individual and team skills as the game ended 87-47.

It was the first competitive game of the season for both teams and showed the appreciative crowd how good quality schools basketball can be played by two keen, committed and well-coached teams.

Daniel Jinkerson led the Greneway scoring with 22 points, with Jack Beck (14), Ayrron Armstrong (12), Nathan Crossman (10) and captain Adam Motti (10) all getting in double figures.
