PAUL Heydon's stint as the new club captain at East Herts Golf Club began with a bang at the weekend.

Heydon's nerves were already on edge for he was teeing-off with the club's ancient hickory shafted club but as he stuck the ball it exploded on impact.

The exploding ball - harmlessly filled with talcum powder - was a joke played by club president Dave Quinney.

"It was great fun," said the new captain, who has just retired as group secretary of the National Farmers Union.

"And a new contest I introduced also proved a huge success."

Members were invited to join in a fun match between two teams headed by the new captain, partnering the club's pro Danny Field, and past captain Paul Scott with vice-captain Mike Blee.

"We managed to lose our match, otherwise the two teams would have been neck-and-neck," said Mr Heydon, who was equally delighted with having 70 members attended his captain's lunch.
