FA Vase Fourth Round

WILL Turl's bullet header three minutes from the end of extra time sent Royston Town into the last 16 of the FA Vase for the first time in the club's history.

It has been a fine week for Paul Attfield's side with this victory coming on top of a stunning County Cup win at St Albans City on Tuesday night but overall this was a gutsy, determined show from his side in a game they struggled to find much fluency in.

Tipton turned up at Garden Walk with a fabulous defensive record in their domestic league and the opening stages of the game suggested it would be difficult to create chances with a wall of five players greeting most of Royston's approach play and a well drilled, experienced midfield unit anchoring and supplying any forward momentum.

Royston started lively but were often thwarted by some over zealous foul play that the referee took a dim view of.

Two early cautions for the visitors could easily have been trebled but the continual stopping of play only affected Royston's normal fast attacking play as the half wore on.

The visitors worked hard up front but their front two often lacked support to create clear openings.

Two set plays caused Royston some difficulty with a header finding the net in the 14th minute but pushing was penalised by the referee and another free kick went right across the six yard box and out for a goal kick.

At the other end both Josh Bronti and Luke Robins looked lively out wide but there was little space to work in and only an angled 20-yard volley from forward Ricky Young from a long free kick that flashed just wide was all they created.

The second half started superbly for Royston with Robins getting early possession out wide and a bit more freedom to attack the Tipton area.

Just three minutes in a raid from Robins saw him square the ball for Ryan Lockett to place a superb 20-yard left footer into the top corner with the 'keeper motionless.

This hardly inspired the Crows as Tipton then progressed into their best spell of the game with some great tenacity and tempo about everything they did.

Robins had another chance soon after the goal with a dipping half volley just off target but Tipton got their leveller just five minutes after Royston's opener.

A simply delivered corner was not claimed by Jorden Gibson and Ross Brown simply loped a header into the net from eight yards.

Tipton sensed some nervousness in Royston's ranks and went for the win.

Attfield put Turl up front to give a more physical option but losing Bronti to injury moments later resulted in an unwanted, enforced changed.

Gibson made one excellent block from a one-on-one effort and another corner routine ended with another header just clearing the crossbar.

At the other end Lewis Endacott was unlucky not to score when his positive run into the box and strike flashed inches wide of the far post.

The referee somehow added on 11 minutes injury time despite only informing his fourth official there would be six and Tipton had a massive chance with second of that remaining.

A darting run from the winger saw him pull the ball back from the goal line and despite having a near on free shot at goal the in rushing forward thrashed his shot wide.

The game went into extra time but the match swung in Royston's favour when five minutes into that period Tipton's Campbell was sent off for an elbow on David Cain as the defender shielded the ball out of play.

Despite no clear chances in the first period Royston seized the initiative in the second period with Tipton doing all out defending to try and get a replay.

Players struggled with injury and cramp and with three minutes remaining the ground erupted. Most of Royston's crossing had been bordering dire throughout the game but a stunning run from centre-back Ben Stocker ended with a superbly delivered cross that was met by Turl's equally well-timed run for a simple execution.

Tipton still had a late opportunity when a last ditch scramble saw a scooped shot just clear the crossbar but their opportunity had passed and Royston progress to another home tie in two weeks against either Wroxham or Armthorpe Welfare who replay next Saturday.
