Ashwell CC (233-7) lost to Great Chishill (244-9) by 11 runs

ASHWELL came up just short in a high scoring affair with Great Chishill on Saturday with a fantastic charge late in the game yielding 80 runs in the final nine overs but leaving them 11 runs adrift of their target.

Winning the toss, Ashwell had asked their opponents to bat first and Great Chishill were given a solid platform with Richard Brunt (22) and Paul Drury (83) putting on 63 for the opening wicket inside 13 overs.

However once Brunt was removed by Andrew Cunningham, Angus Gent was caught and bowled cheaply by Tim Moynihan and suddenly Chishill were 66-2.

Drury continued his fine spell, though, and was joined in a stand of 98 by the hard hitting Sam Stoop who scored 66 in double quick time.

Stoop played some exquisite drives and it was a relief for Ashwell when he was eventually deceived by the bowling of Graham Scott.

At 206-3, Chishill had the base from which to push on and make a score in the region of 270-280.

That they didn't was largely down to some impressive work by Alex Griffin who after a first spell of 0-29 came back to run through Gt Chishill's middle order and finish with figures of 5-65, his first five wicket haul for the senior team.

Ashwell had done well to peg back the run rate, but a score of 244-9 was a daunting one.

In reply, Ashwell got off to the best possible start with Martyn Deal (33) and Tim Moynihan (39) putting on 72 in just 16 overs.

Once they were dismissed, the former by Stoop and the latter by Harry Picton-Turbervill, Jonathan Merrell (25), Mark Stier (12) and Richard Young (12) all got starts but none of them went on to play an innings of real substance.

By the time Martin Talks came to the crease the required run rate had edged up to around 10 an over, but for a glorious half an hour he flayed the Great Chishill bowling to all parts of the ground as his fine run of form with the bat continued in a sparkling knock of 60.

The target proved just too big an ask for Ashwell though as finally Picton-Turberville (3-32) broke through and Ashwell's innings closed at 233-7, with their local rivals taking victory by 11 runs.
