Cambridge United's terrible away form continued as they went down to a 2-1 defeat at Altrincham on Saturday. Three new faces made their first appearance for the U's as manager Rob Newman continues to search for the right combination: in midfield, Stacy Caldicott, signed on loan from Hereford, and Rob Wolleaston, a former Chelsea, Portsmouth and Bradford player signed on a free transfer, formed a new central partnership. Up front Jamie Guy, signed on loan from Colchester, was paired with David Bridges, the midfielder with seven goals this season given a chance to impress as a striker. Indeed, it was Bridges who scored United's only goal, but only after Altrincham had taken a two-goal lead within the opening half-hour as Cambridge got off to their customary sluggish start. The goal coincided with a tactical re-shuffle by the manager which resulted in United playing a standard 4-4-2 formation, and it can be no coincidence that the U's performance improved considerably from that point. They failed to find the equaliser, but there are some positives to be taken from the match: all three newcomers had good games, Guy particularly impressing up front, and Bridges took his goal very well, offering Rob Newman another option. However, the Us' away record is now the worst in the Conference. If you are a programme collector, be sure to get to the Abbey Stadium this Sunday, where the Football Programme Directory will be hosting the annual Cambridge United Programme Fair in the Harris Suite between 11am-2pm. The next game is Southport at home on Saturday.
