ROYSTON Golf Club is offering the chance for newcomers to try the game for the first time when it holds an open day on Saturday, April 16.

The event starts at 9.30am and offers the chance to take the first steps towards learning the game – free of charge.

After a cup of coffee and a brief introduction, the attendees will be shown all aspects of golf, including putting, chipping, driving and bunker play. There will also be some fun competitions with prizes and the chance to meet some of the members.

Club professional, Sean Clark, and his assistant, Dan Blyth, will be on hand to offer expert advice. The scheme will also offer some group coaching and if any of the participants are interested, they can progress to individual coaching and a trial three-month membership.

For further details about ‘Give Golf a Go’ or to book a place for the day, phone Sean Clark on 01763 243476 or email: clark.sean@btconnect.com.

The club will also be launching its upgraded Junior Academy this Saturday. For more information visit www.golfcrows.co.uk.

Both the ladies and the men won their third round matches of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic team competition last week.

The ladies played Heydon Grange on Friday in bright but breezy conditions making for a testing round. Home advantage was made to count and the team of Jenny Jarvis, Emma Loga, Mary Wilson, Mary Mitchell and Jenny Thompson recorded a fine 5-0 victory.

The men played last year’s beaten finalists, St Neots, and recorded a 3-2 win, helped by Mark Rogers’ brilliant round of six-under par. Other team members were Adrian Shoebridge, Adam Woods, Pete Prentice and Steve Rogers.

Elsewhere, Steve Brooker won the Saturday Stableford with 44 points ahead of Martin Walker (40) and Gavin Evans (40).

In the Men’s Medal Division One, Darren Thompson (65) finished ahead of Lee Bonney (67) and Jim Geraghty (67) while in Division Two, Simon Clark (64) beat Richard Collett (64) and Taff Geraghty (65).
