FOXTON slipped to a surprise two-wicket defeat at the hands of bottom club Kimbolton last weekend.

However, coach Matt Gray was philosophical after seeing his team defeated for only the second time this season.

"It was an entertaining game, as low-scoring encounters often are," said Gray.

"We bowled very well but could have done a bit better with the bat."

Foxton won the toss and chose to bat. However, this turned out to be the wrong decision as they slipped to 102 for 9.

Gray said: "We were in two minds whether to bat or bowl, and as it turned it out we probably made the wrong decision.

"But hindsight is a marvellous thing, and you have to say well done to Kimbolton who played some good cricket and made the most of the conditions."

It could have been worse for Foxton, who were without a clutch of regular first team players.

A last-wicket partnership of 43 between Adie Ingrey and Andy Gray saw them reach a respectable total of 145.

Gray was also in good form with the ball, taking 4 for 48 as Foxton looked to pull off an unexpected victory.

However, a spell of loose bowling saw them concede 52 runs in three overs and hand Kimbolton the impetus.

They eventually scraped home with two wickets to spare.

"If we hadn't had that little spell then I think we would have won," said Gray.

"But it hasn't hurt us too much because Kimbolton are at the bottom of the table, and a couple of the teams around us only drew, so they haven't gained any ground."

This weekend Foxton travel to Yaxley, and Gray is hoping his team will get back to winning ways.

"Yaxley is always a tough place to go, and it isn't the best pitch. But if we play to our best we're more than capable of winning," he said.
