(Fowlmere win 4-3 on penalties)

FOR the second time in three days, Fowlmere won this hard-fought Bambridge Cup clash on penalties against an in-form Comberton side who had won their previous five games.

The game started with the young home side making a lot of eager runs across the field.

But Fowlmere stood up well and on the break had the best chance of the half when Trevor Symonds found himself one-on-one with the keeper but shot narrowly wide.

Comberton came back and should have scored when their left-winger dribbled past four players before crashing his shot against the crossbar.

Fowlmere then had a couple of long shots from Shaun Douglas which flew narrowly over.

After the break, the hosts started to put more pressure on the Fowlmere defence, who soaked up what they had to offer, but the visitors had a lucky escape when a shot from the edge of the box was superbly tipped on to a post by keeper Matt Foggo.

Fowlmere threatened on the break and with Terry Woods and Dec Shilton working hard in the centre of midfield, the game started to swing from end to end.

Fowlmere almost snatched a goal with 10 minutes left when a neat one-two from Woods and Shilton saw the latter's shot go just wide.

With no extra-time the game went to penalties, which Fowlmere were ready for after their shoot-out success two days earlier.

Fowlmere won this with good penalties from Nick King, Barry Wood, Rory Clarke and the winning shot from Symonds.

Fowlmere: Foggo, Faubel, Geal, King, O'Farrell, Kew, Fields (Clarke), T Woods, Shilton, Douglas (B Wood), Symonds.

Melbourn 0 Fowlmere 6

FOWLMERE travelled to their local rivals to play their third game in five days.

Fowlmere started the better side, playing some neat football, with most things going through forward Dec Shilton.

After 20 minutes, Fowlmere took the lead when a mix-up in the Melbourn defence saw the ball fall to George Kew, who tapped the ball over the onrushing keeper.

In the second half, Melbourn came out in determined mood and had a lot of possession but Fowlmere grabbed a second on the break when Kev Martin's long pass sent Shilton in on goal and his shot was deflected past the keeper.

Melbourn, to their credit, kept going but again Fowlmere pounced on the break to score a third when Field's throw found Geal whose cross met by Kew to score his second.

Fowlmere were on top and it was soon 4-0 when Neil Faubel's perfect cross was met by skipper Terry Woods, who headed home.

Minutes later, Woods saw a 25-yard shot cannon off the crossbar. Melbourn kept going and Fowlmere had keeper Matt Foggo to thank when he pulled off two quality saves.

But when Fowlmere decided to play the passing game Melbourn's defence struggled to cope and it was no surprise when the visitors added two more late goals through Shilton and Fields.

Fowlmere: Foggo, Geal, King, Martin, Sooter, Kew, O'Farrell, Faubel, Woods, Shilton, Fields.

JM Metals 2 Ickleton 2

METALS' promotion dreams ended as they were held by Ickleton, on Sunday.

Needing a win to seal a place in the Halls of Cambridge Sunday League Premier Division, Metals got off to a bright start, playing some good football and causing Ickleton problems.

After 20 minutes the pressure paid off when Terry Woods played a neat one-two with Ryan Van Der Merwe and smashed a shot home.

This seemed to wake up Ickleton as they were confidently knocking the ball around and had much of the possession for the remainder of the half.

Ickleton got their just rewards five minutes before the break when a cross was met by their striker to make it 1-1 at half-time.

The second half started much the same as the first ended and it did not take long before Ickleton took the lead.

Metals realised they needed to up their game and did just that with Dalton O'Brien and Paul Stokes bossing the midfield.

With 20 minutes to go, Metals equalised as Paul Stokes struck a powerful free-kick into the bottom left-hand corner.

Metals looked like regaining the lead but with five minutes to go Stokes saw his 18-yard drive well saved.

JM Metals: Coughlin, D O'Farrell, S Plester, R Ellis, D Plester, A Stokes, T Woods, L Austin (D O'Brien), P Stokes, C Hunter, R Van Der Merwe.
