FOWLMERE'S woes continued on Saturday with the 5-2 defeat against Camden United sending Steve Walker's side dangerously close to a relegation battle.

The turn of the year has witnessed a disappointing decline for Fowlmere, with their last league win dating back to January 12.

Since then they have taken just one point from a possible 21, with Saturday's defeat to Camden their tenth of the season.

Walker has attributed his side's disappointing run to "bad luck" and a few "defensive mishaps", with his side unlucky not to have picked up points against West Wratting, Steeple Bumpstead, Fulbourn Institute Reserves and Duxford United, having played the better football.

However, Walker said that his side did not deserve anything from their latest defeat, and insisted that there was just "too many errors".

He told The Crow: "When you make that amount of errors, there's only ever going to be one outcome.

"Again it's another disappointing result, but whereas in previous games we've lost despite playing well, on Saturday we never got going. "

Defender Darren Sewell had put Fowlmere in front early on, when he headed home Dan Caley's corner.

However, the visitors soon levelled and by half time they had added two more, following some sloppy defending.

After the break, Karyl Darcey reduced the deficit with a well-taken penalty following a foul on Caley.

But the revival was short lived, with Camden soaking up the Fowlmere pressure and snatching two more well-taken strikes.

Sam Walker, making his Fowlmere debut, did go close late on, with the 18-year-old striker impressing with a lively performance.

Walker said: "Sam did really well for us and I'm hoping he can be involved for the rest of the campaign because he has ability. It was his first game in three or four years and he showed a lot of quality."

And with no game this weekend giving the three teams below them a chance to close the gap, Fowlmere's game with rivals Cambourne Rovers next week looks like a vital one.

Walker said: "I don't like using the word relegation, but it's not going well at the moment. We have eight games to go and we're certainly capable of turning things around!
