STEEPLE crashed to their worst defeat of the season against a lively Ashdon Villa side on Saturday.

The inconsistency which has dogged the last couple of months, was evident again as they failed to come to terms with a difficult pitch and inspired hosts.

Reserve team keeper Tim Tidey who is enjoying an extended run in the first team, led a charmed life in the first-half, as poor defending left him far too exposed.

It was two long balls that led to the first-half goals, with Tidey being lobbed for the first and calmly rounded for the second.

Only wasteful finishing and the woodwork saved Morden further embarrassment.

Steeple's best effort came from a flowing move which resulted in a fine save to deny Nick Carlton's goalbound effort.

There was some improvement in the second period as Charlie Prothero in particular tried to raise the level.

And when the well-marshalled Ben Holt did manage to lose his marker, his fine run and shot whistled over the bar.

With 25 minutes remaining, the game was over, when Tidey could only palm an effort into the path of a Villa striker, who ultimately smashed home the loose ball.

But there was further Steeple misery to come when more shambolic defending gifted Ashdon a fourth.

Steeple will need to improve for their visit to title chasers Great Chishill on Saturday.
