BUNTINGFORD Town boss Paul Attfield was delighted as his side virtually wrapped up the Herts County League championship with a 3-0 home win against Sandridge Rovers on Saturday.

Barring a set of freak results, Town have captured the league title in only their second season in the Premier Division.

A point from their home game against mid-table London Lions on Saturday will seal top spot - but even if they lose, their only challenger would have to record some big wins to deny Attfield's team the title.

Third-placed Whitewebbs are the only team who can deny Buntingford the title, but with two games remaining, they are six points behind Town with a goal difference 17 worse than the league leaders.

Attfield said: "I'm running out of superlatives to use at present.

"This was another very professional performance in the most trying of conditions.

"We scored our first and second goals at good times to ease any pressure, and had enough experience and confidence to see the game out from that point.

"I was particularly pleased with the quality of our dead ball situations today. They caused Sandridge lots of problems.

"Mathematically we still need one point, so we must stay extremely focused until our first position is made concrete - but if we lose it now I'll retire and take up tiddlywinks."

Saturday's win came two days after Craig Hammond had scored all five goals in a 5-1 victory at Met Police Bushey to set up Attfield's team to seal the league championship.
