FOR the second week running Royston Town Vets were on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat - this time at the hands of Hertford-based Goldin Old Boys.

It was a tight opening 20 minutes with the play mostly contested in the middle of the park, with very few chances created.

However, just as Town had started to exert some pressure on the Goldin defence, the hosts broke forward down the right with a Goldin forward heading home from an excellent cross.

Colin McArthur created one good opening, but unselfishly tried to find his strike partner Paul Lewis, with the opportunity eventually wasted.

And it was Royston who were enjoying the majority of the ball, with another good chance falling for Ian Stubbs who skewed a great chance wide of the Goldin goal.

Their pressure also produced a succession of corners, and if not for a combination of outstanding saves and lacklustre finishing, Town could well have been in front at half-time.

In the second half, Royston continued to dominate with Jason Clark and Carlo Silenti controlling the midfield and creating chances for both Lewis aand McArthur.

However, against the run of play, it was the home side who took advantage of the next opening with a deflected effort finding its way past Merv Chaffey.

But Town responded well and immediately went on the attack with McArthur going close following a pin-point corner, before Brian Cannon's brilliant cross was turned home by Clark's majestic header.

Royston battled bravely to claw their way back into the game, but failed to turn their possession into goals, with Goldin doing just enough to maintain their one-goal advantage.

# Royston Town Vets face Cambridge Vets at Garden Walk on Monday, February 18.
