PETER Leete hit four goals for the Vets as they got back into the groove following the Christmas and New Year break.

Town began in positive fashion and created a number of good openings in the first few minutes but the final ball failed to find its target.

With Steve Holden controlling the back line the defence was able to deal easily with sporadic Dundee attacks and Colin McArthur was a spectator in goal for Town.

Town finally broke the deadlock after 30 minutes when Paul Lewis produced an accurate cross from the left and Leete headed in coolly at the far post.

Town created more good chances at the start of the second half but a combination of poor finishing and excellent Dundee goalkeeping prevented Town from extending their lead.

Not surprisingly they were made to pay for their profligacy when the visitors equalised from a rare breakaway.

Kevin Flack was left one-on-one with a Dundee forward and could not prevent the difficult bouncing ball from being lobbed over him and keeper McArthur to tie the game up at 1-1.

The one-goal advantage for Town was soon restored when Lewis was again provider for Leete to notch his second.

Dundee were now creating more chances and the terrific Ian Stubbs was forced into an excellent last-ditch tackle in the six-yard area to prevent the visitors from levelling again.

The third goal for Town came following good approach play from Glen and Nick Humphries and Leete made no mistake for his hat-trick. He then rounded off his and his team's scoring with five minutes to go to give Town a convincing start to 2009.

Royston Town Vets: McArthur, Stubbs, Bowers, Holden, Flack, Quinn, G Humphries, N Humphries, Silenti, Lewis, Leete. Subs: Harris, Allen.

Town's fixture next Sunday is away to Standon and Puckeridge (9.30am meet at Garden Walk).
