CAMBRIDGE United are just one game away from a return to the football league after beating Burton Albion to secure a place in the play off final.

United will face Exeter City in the final at Wembley on May 18 after defeating Nigel Clough's side 3-2 on aggregate.

Two late goals from Lee McEvilly - both the result of debatable refereeing decisions - rescued United in last Friday's first leg at the Pirelli Stadium.

Having fallen behind to a Daryl Clare penalty and a header from Darren Stride, McEvilly came off the bench to net a penalty and then curl home a free kick from just outside the box.

With the tie finely poised at 2-2, the U's made the perfect start to the second leg when Rob Wolleaston gave them the lead inside the first 30 seconds. McEvilly's shot was turned on to the post by Kevin Poole, and Wolleaston followed up to convert the rebound.

However, Burton soon took control, displaying the expansive passing football which has become their trademark under Clough. They levelled through Clare, and it took a string of excellent saves from Danny Potter to ensure that the scores remained level going into half time.

In the second period United upped the tempo, and Magno Vieira and Dan Gleeson were both denied by Poole before Wolleaston scored the winning goal when an attempted cross looped in at the far post.

The final whistle saw many of the 7,276 crowd invade the pitch to celebrate with the players.

Praising the supporters as his side's 12th man, manager Jimmy Quinn said: "Even when we conceded a goal the fans were right behind the team. They deserve promotion, and I want to do it for them."

It is expected that United will be allocated 27,000 tickets for the final.

They are set to go on sale over the weekend.
