Cambridge United finally returned to winning ways on Saturday with a 3-0 home victory over Gravesend & Northfleet.

The goals came from Michael Gash, his first for the club rewarding the faith Jimmy Quinn has shown in him recently, and from Courtney Pitt and David Bridges, both also scoring their first goals of the season.

After the match, manager Quinn declared it "the best performance since I've been here" - the only negative point was the withdrawal of Robbie Simpson in the first half with a serious head wound.

Danny Brown made his United debut in the game after signing for the U's in mid-week, and gave an impressive performance alongside Ritchie Hanlon in central midfield. "The fans will like him," Quinn said. "He's a wholehearted player and he gets stuck in."

The youth team beat Hednesford in the FA Youth Cup firsst round last week, and are now one step away from a possible meeting with Premiership opposition.

They now entertain Tranmere Rovers' youth team at the Abbey Stadium in the second round on Thursday November 24, kick-off 7pm. Admission prices are the usual £4 for adults and £2 for concessions.

Two board members have responded this week to media speculation concerning the future of Cambridge United and Cambridge City.

Paul Barry admitted that talks had taken place with CCFC directors over the possibility of a groundshare, but Brian Attmore quashed speculation regarding a merger of the two clubs, saying, "It is off the table as far as we are concerned. I cannot see the benefits for either club."

United will be looking to build on their recent victory with another home game on Saturday against Morecambe at 3pm. For more information, either check the club website www.cambridgeunited.com, or ring the club on 01223 566500.
