BUNTINGFORD missed out on the chance to go top of the Herts County League on Tuesday as Wormley took revenge for two heavy defeats against Paul Attfield's team with a resolute performance to take the three points.
Frustratingly for Attfield, Town played well, with long periods of pressure but struggled in front of goal, and two second-half breakaway goals rubbed salt in the wound.
"I couldn't ask any more from the players - they did all they could apart from score and we just got hit by two sucker punch goals," said Attfield.
"Playing like this on another night we would have won by four or five goals. But once or twice during a season this will happen to every team and we just have to take it on the chin and move on."
It didn't help matters that Attfield had to make six changes from Saturday's line-up, and gave full first team debuts to Josh Bronti, Ricky Young, Carl Frostick and Jim Hollingsworth ,but Town still looked lively from the off.
Despite the visitors controlling the first half, there was little in the way of goalscoring opportunities.
But in the second half there was a siege on the Rovers area, but they defended bravely.
With Rovers' first attack of the half in the 58th minute Jamie Vine was allowed time to turn 25 yards from goal and hit a cracking volley which Damion Williamson parried, only to see the ball drop agonisingly under the bar and just over the line before he could retrieve the situation.
A change to a 3-4-3 formation saw Buntingford pour forward, but Wormley wrapped the game up on 83 minutes when a quick counter-attack left Town outnumbered at the back, and Michael Linger drilled home from 12 yards.
