JAN Stephens' first half goal was enough to send Town joint top of the Herts County League, last Wednesday.

The first half was completely dominated by the home side but the hard surface often hampered the final ball or finish which became increasingly frustrating as the half went on.

At the back Endacott, Babbage, Cain and Chaffey were outstanding making Town keeper Damion Williamson a virtual spectator but the chances created were few and far between.

Will Turl probably had Town's best chance on 15 minutes when he ran onto a flicked ball but the advancing keeper blocked with his legs.

Chris Hardy had a long range shot go just wide and David Cain headed just over from a corner but the decisive moment finally arrived in the 43rd minute.

A long Dean Chaffey throw caused panic around the visiting six yard box and Stephens crashed home the loose ball from eight yards.

Finally having taken the lead the visitors reacted better to the half-time interval and returned with more fight in their game.

Their best and only real chance arrived just two minutes after the restart when a through ball caught Town a little square but a forward snatched his shot wide when well positioned.

Codicote then gambled with a three man attack that made the game more stretched and end-to-end but both defences remained in good control and despite continued good approach play from both teams no other clear chances were made for either team.

A number of late corners for the visiting team were well dealt with by the determined home side and the points were well deserved by the final whistle.

Town: D Williamson, L Endacott, D Chaffey, J Babbage, D Cain, J Hollingsworth (M Smith), C Hardy, T Malins (J Morriss), W Turl, R Young (G Christie), J Stephens
