YEAR 6 footballers from Greneway and Roysia Schools represented North Herts Schools' with distinction in the prestigious Hertfordshire under-11 Wix Trophy tournament.
This event involved the best 16 football teams in the county coming together at Parmiters School, Watford last Wednesday for a quarter-final stage tournament.
The winners of each of the four groups would play in the finals night at Clarence Park, the home of St Albans FC.
Roysia were in Group Three and enjoyed close games with Grange School, Codicote and Radlett.
They defeated Codicote 1-0 and narrowly lost the others with Radlett Prep school winning the group.
A little more luck in front of goal and Roysia could have made the last four.
Group Two saw Greneway face games against the always strong William Ransom (Hitchin), Longmeadow (Stevenage), Sandon and Colney Heath.
In the first six matches the teams could not be separated as all were drawn, leading Mr.Graves (Greneway coach) to call the group the 'group of death'.
Greneway had created many scoring chances in all of their games but only had a good equalising goal from Guy Curtis against Longmeadow to show for their efforts.
The group was so tight that whoever won a match well would probably win the group. In their last match against a very good Sandon school.
it was Greneway who found the elusive win as they again played well and converted their chances this time to win 4-1 and progress to the finals as undefeated group winners.
North Herts, and in particular, Royston had two superb sets of sporting ambassadors representing the town and both nearly won through together for the finals.
It is hoped that Greneway can bring back the Wix Trophy for North Herts when they play on Tuesday.
The other schools through to the finals are St Marys (Baldock), Radlett Prep and St Columbas College (St Albans).
