Royston Town boss Steve Castle says he relishes the Crows’ underdog status as their 4-1 win away to Frome Town on Saturday propelled them into a play-off spot.

The Crows made it eight goals in two Evo-Stik Southern Premier League games and also earned their tenth win in 15 to catapult Castle’s side into fourth and final play-off spot with 16 games remaining.

Goals from Scott Bridges, Joe Hankins and a Rohdell Gordon double secured all three points for the Crows, coming from behind after Joe Raynes opened the scoring for Frome.

Speaking to CrowSport, boss Castle said: “There’s 10 weeks to go and we’ll give the play-offs a right good go.

“Being the underdogs is a position I relish that’s for certain.

“It feels good to be in the play-offs but it’s false because we’ve got Slough breathing down our necks.”

“There’s no doubt about the quality we’ve got.”

The game got off to a rocky start for the Crows - on what Castle described as a ‘terrible pitch’ - with Raynes knocking in a Darren Jeffries cross after five minutes.

Bridges replied 15 minutes later for Royston, heading in a corner. The Crows lead after 30

minutes, Gordon cutting in from the left-wing and firing a shot into the far corner for 2-1 at the break.

The home side went down to 10 men early in the half, as goal-scorer Raynes was shown a straight red for an alleged elbow.

Royston secured the points in the eighty-first and in added time, with Gordon’s second from inside the 18-yard-box and Hankins netting the fourth, running through and slotting home.

Castle added: “It was a very hard fought win. Our attitude had to be spot on and the lads’ attitudes were 10-out-of-10, I’m very pleased with the days work.

Castle was full of praise for his wealth of options in the Royston Town attack, who had scored 18 goals in five games earlier in the season.

The legendary former Leyton Orient midfielder said: “Not everyone is on top form every week but at different times we’ve seen all the strikers perform superbly.

“On different occasions it’s been Adam Marriott, Josh Castiglione, John Frendo, or on Saturday Rhodell Gordon, who produced the quality we know he can.

“It’s been brilliant. Sometimes we struggle to score but in general when we reach the final third we make the keeper work.”

Royston make the 344 round-trip to Weymouth on Saturday, as the Crows look to avenge their loss to the South coast side at Garden Walk in late January, falling 2-1 after a close game, John Frendo netting for Royston.

Castle said: “They’re a very good team, very good counter-attacking but at home it’ll be a different dynamic as they’ll have to push the game towards us.

“That’ll put more pressure on our defence but we’ll have the opportunity to counter on them.

“Every team that faces us will know they’ve been in a contest because our tails are up at the moment.”
