Royston Town boss Steve Castle said his players should ‘fear for their job’ after two red cards cost the Crows in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Weymouth.

The Crows lost their sixth away game of the season on the South coast as John Frendo and January signing Sam Gaughran saw straight reds, Frendo sent walking for ‘undefendable’ abusive language in the first-half.

Crows boss Steve Castle said: “There’s a few in the squad on their last warnings. It really is affecting us and they should fear for their job if they keep offending.

“I love to defend my players to the hilt but I’m sorry, I can’t defend the abusive language of Frendo. Everyone heard what was said and the manner it was said. It was disappointing.

“I don’t want to lose anyone but there’s no point giving final warnings and then keeping them because they’ll think I’m too soft. You have to set precedents.

“The chairman and I will be talking to Frendo, as we did Sam Corcoran, about how we’re going to move forward with it.”

While Castle said he has seen a ‘definite’ improvement in Corcoran’s behaviour, after the midfielder was sent off twice at the start of the season, the legendary former Leyton Orient captain was frustrated with his side’s disciplinary record.

He added: “We’re a competitive team but we’ve had far too many sendings off and it’s cost us at times.

“We’d had a very good spell of discipline since Christmas but we’ve got back into silly old habits and it cost us dearly on Saturday.

“It’s unfortunate, they’re a good group of lads but these things are letting the whole team down.”

The 27 minutes before the Frendo red card were tight, with the Crows creating chances. However, a mistake inside the Crows half after 19 minutes was pounced on by Calvin Brooks, who slotted into the bottom corner for 1-0.

Title challengers Weymouth seized the upper hand and doubled their lead after 44 minutes, Ben Thomson turning the Crows defenders and rifling into the top corner for 2-0 at half-time.

Despite the one man disadvantage, Castle’s side rallied in the second half, testing the home defence. However, Gaughran’s challenge on Harry Baker earned another straight red, squashing any hope for the Crows.

Brandon Goodship added a third for Weymouth in the 73rd minute, curling one into the bottom right from outside the box before the game finished 3-0.

The Crows face troubled Merthyr Town at Garden Walk Saturday, after the Welsh side were victorious 2-1 last time the sides met. However, it will be a different test this time, after the Martyrs were struck by financial trouble and forced to lose their first team, now fielding a much weaker side.

Castle’s side then face their biggest threat to the fourth play-off spot, Slough Town on the Tuesday.

Castle said: “There’s people that are talking negatively, as if it’s all over for the play-offs. I’d like to think we will keep driving until mathematically impossible to reach the play-offs.”
