ABBEY ANGLE Cambridge United finally secured their first win of 2006 on Saturday, defeating Southport 2-1 at the Abbey Stadium. Recent signing Rob Wolleaston put the U's ahead on 15 minutes, but despite dominating possession, the hosts could not consolidate their lead, and when Steven Daly equalised for the visitors with just six minutes of normal time remaining, it looked like the U's would have to settle for a point. However just one minute later, a free kick into the box found skipper Mark Peters, who made no mistake, heading home to settle the match for the U's. Unfortunately his subsequent booking for over-celebrating means he will now have to serve a two-match suspension. The match was preceded by a minute's silence for two members of United's match day team: Karl Clarke, who had worked for the club variously as a match day steward, selling programmes and helping in the club shop, was tragically killed in a cycling accident on January 30, aged just 23 years old; and Charlie Owen, who had played many roles around the club including mascot supervisor, passed away in Addenbrooke's Hospital on Saturday February 11 at the age of 83. This week Cambridge Fans United representatives met with John Howard, director of Cambridge United and club landlords Bideawhile, to discuss various options for the future of United's ground, including relocation to the Milton landfill site. No agreements were made but the talks were frank and open on both sides. The club will be holding trials for its Girls Centre of Excellence U14 and U16 squads on Monday February 27 and Monday March 6 at Comberton Village College field turf facility. For more information, phone Andy Coles at the Abbey Stadium on 01223 416238. United's next game is away to Woking on Saturday March 4 at 3pm; they then play Grays Athletic at the Abbey Stadium on Tuesday March 7 at 7.45pm, looking to avenge a 5-3 defeat in the away fixture this season.
