A 40-yard thunderbolt from Wayne Hatswell set Cambridge United on the way to a 2-0 win over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

United were missing several key players, but a home victory never looked in doubt after Hatswell's fourth-minute free kick.

With visiting keeper Ryan Robinson expecting a cross, the ex-Rushden defender took aim and blasted a tremendous effort into the top left-hand corner.

Like many teams who have visited the Abbey Stadium this season, Forest Green lined up in a defensive 4-5-1 formation, with 30-goal Stuart Fleetwood consigned to a right-wing role.

As a result, they failed to trouble Danny Potter, and United missed several chances to extend their lead.

Lee Boylan, Lee McEvilly, and Courtney Pitt all saw shots blocked, while inconsistent referee Oli Langford turned down what looked a valid penalty appeal when McEvilly was hacked down in the box.

McEvilly was a menace to the Forest Green defence throughout, and his persistence led to the second goal, as he pressurised Mark Preece into chesting the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Jimmy Quinn gave new signing from West Ham, Jack Jeffery, a run out in the last 20 minutes. The 18-year old striker has been signed, initially on a month's loan, to replace Scott Rendell, who has completed his move to Peterborough.

This weekend in-form York City, who have lost just one of their last 19 games, are the visitors to the Abbey Stadium.

Michael Morrison will join Dan Gleeson and Mark Peters on the sidelines, after he collected his fifth booking of the season against Forest Green.

This means Stephen Reed is likely to drop back into defence, with Ben Farrell replacing him in midfield. The match kicks off at 3pm.
