THERE was a double success for the under-eights as they defeated Letchworth Whites. The first game was evenly contested, but Cougars managed to find the goal through George Woods after some great passing moves from Charlie Owen and Reece Voller. The second half saw defender Sammy Friend bag his first Cougars goal after a well-worked corner from Owen, to ensure a Cougars victory. Letchworth played the second game with the same team, but they played well and made it as difficult as possible for the fresh Cougars. Buntingford battled well playing a great passing game, and had a great many chances at goal, with Thomas Payne finally finding the target, for the only goal of the match. Playing unbeaten league leaders Letchworth, the under-12 Blues put in another terrific all round performance in what was a pulsating game. After some early Letchworth pressure, Blues pushed forward and took the lead from a Jonathon Peck shot from outside the box. The visitors then equalised and then took the lead early in the second half. However, to their credit Cougars fought back and dominated the game from then on. George Duffin was unlucky to see his fierce shot hit the bar and the Letchworth keeper pulled off a string of good saves to deny Cougars the equaliser. A lacklustre first half cost the under-12 Whites dearly. Indeed they were lucky to go in only 1-0 down at half-time. A rousing half-time team-talk saw Cougars come out fighting and the team at least grabbed a consolation through Ashley Davies. Rangers were too strong however, and ran out 3-1 winners. A game of incident and excellent goals provided great entertainment in a passionate under-13 derby against Royston Colts. Royston had the better of the opening minutes but were not able to make the most of their early chances. Ben Johnson picked up the ball in midfield for Cougars and ran with it before firing a high ball goal wards that beat the keeper. Alfie Long put Cougars two up with another high effort. Colts came out blazing in the second half and soon clawed a goal back. Seeking the equaliser, Colts left themselves open at the back allowing Scott Piggott to get his first goal of 2006. A Colts corner left Rice with no chance and put them back into contention, but they could not find the equaliser to force the draw.
