After extra time

KNIGHTS fought back from a goal down to take the Billy Doyle Cup in a pulsating game.

It was no more than their play deserved as they dominated this match after a shaky first 10 minutes.

Stevenage came out of the blocks quickly and put the Reds under long periods of pressure.

Just as it looked as if Baldock have weathered the storm Michael Humphrey picked up the loose ball on the edge of the box and unleashed a low unstoppable shot past James Gilbert in the Baldock goal.

This setback seemed to spur Knights into action and with Tom James and Tom Lee in the midfield driving their team, Baldock took the game to Stevenage.

However they were faced by a well drilled defence that allowed Baldock just some long range efforts and for all of Baldock's pressure Borough went into the dressing room with the lead.

The second half saw Baldock continue to put pressure on Borough and it looked as if their pressure would pay off when Aaron Slack spun and shot towards goal. The ball flew off the underside of the crossbar and was scrambled away by a grateful Hutton.

Baldock's pressure finally paid off 10 minutes later when Jake Linsday Smith shrugged off his marker just inside the Stevenage half and raced towards the goal

He skipped passed the onrushing keeper and coolly side footed the ball home into the empty net.

Despite several other near misses the game went into extra time. Stevenage forced several corners but they, too, came up against a well marshalled defence with Duane Brailsford and Sammy Hill in commanding form.

Chris Hogg came close to break the deadlock but his snapshot at the near post found the side netting.

With time running out and with penalties looming, Stevenage broke quickly down their right flank and the near perfect cross to the far post was superbly headed towards the top corner of the net but somehow keeper Gilbert showed magnificent agility to tip the ball over the bar.

It was a save that would have graced any game and proved to be vital as within a minute Baldock broke again.

This time Hogg picked up the ball just inside his own half and forced himself to the edge of the box where he smashed his shot over the stranded keeper and into the roof of the net to give his side a hard earned victory.
