Greneway’s basketball team also taste success in final
GRENEWAY’S Year 8 girls’ football team triumphed in the North East Herts Schools’ Sports Partnership football tournament last week.
Greneway hosted the fourth annual event contested between Greneway Year 7, Ralph Sadlier and Edwinstree middle schools and each team met in 20 minute, 11-a-side matches.
Greneway Year 7 drew 0-0 with Edwinstree in the first match before the Year 8 side drew 1-1 with Ralph Sadlier thanks to Sphie Shannon’s goal.
The second set of matches pitted Greneway Year 7 against their more experienced Year 8 team while Ralph Sadleir took on Edwinstree.
The older Greneway players proved too strong for their opponents and won 3-0 with goals from Shannon (two) and Sophie Hills, while Edwinstree won their match 2-1.
Greneway Year 7 drew 0-0 in their final match against Edwinstree while Greneway Year 8 overcame Ralph Sadlier 2-0 to win the tournament. Both goals came from Shannon.
Meanwhile, Greneway’s Year 7 basketball team won the North Herts Schools’ U12 Basketball Association Championship final last week after beating Hitchin Boys School 62-41 – the 16th Year 7 title Greneway have won in nine years.
Both teams came into the match, held at Letchworth’s St Christopher School, unbeaten but it was HBS who started on the front foot and scored almost straight from the tip-off.
Greneway fought back, though, and the score at the second interval was 28-22 in Greneway’s favour.
The Royston school continued to take the initiative and by the end of the third quarter they lead 45-30.
Royston saw the job through to claim the victory despite a late fightback from HBS.
