A HARSH penalty decision against Kyle Darcy cost Fowlmere two points against West Wratting Reserves on Saturday.
Standing in for manager Steve Walker, Shaun Audley saw his team defending a 2-1 lead with just 15 minutes of the game remaining when the referee below for a spot kick after the ball had hit Kyle Darcy on the shoulder.
Until then Fowlmere had looked the better of the two teams despite their opponents fielding first team players after their match had been called off due to the weather.
The opening exchanges of the game were tight with both teams looking to work out the other's weaknesses, and the home team were the first to find an opening.
On 15 minutes Ian Ruggles put Fowlmere ahead following some scrappy play in the West Wratting box.
He found himself free with the ball and was able to chip it over the keeper from six yards.
Fowlmere then pushed their opponents back and had the best of the remainder of the half.
They increased their lead 10 minutes before half time through Dan Caley who squeezed the ball under the opposition's keeper after he was put clean through.
At half time Audley warned his charges to expect a comeback from the visitors but despite this his players were unable to hold off their opponents for long.
Shortly after the interval West Wratting's Stephen Lumm popped up to score a scrappy goal for his team when he poked the ball home after it had gone through a crowded penalty area.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser while the home team looked to extend their lead and the match turned into a n exhibition of end to end football.
Audley, Ruggles and Joe Carver had chances to extend Fowlmere's lead but none were able to put the ball away, and with 15 minutes left the visitors got their penalty and Martin Smithson converted.
Late chances by Ruggles and Dave Carver were squandered and the game ended all square.
Shaun Audley said: "It was a disappointing result because at one point we were 2-0 up, but if you had asked me before the game if I would have accepted a draw I would have said yes because they had a few first team players in their team.
"West Wratting did have 35 minutes in the second half when they put us under pressure, which I did warn the players to expect and I think getting their goal shortly after the break gave them a lift to go on and get something from the game.
"We're still a point ahead of them in the league and only four points behind Duxford with three games in hand.
"Hopefully we can take all three points when we play Gamlingay next week."
