East Anglian Cup - First Round
Royston Town 3 Stansted 1
A three-goal burst in the final fifteen minutes of this cup tie gave Royston another excellent cup scalp in the form of Essex Senior Premier League side Stansted at Garden Walk on Tuesday evening.
The game was played at a high tempo by both sides from start to finish with the visitors matching The Crows and it was good entertainment value.
Stansted had the better of the first half without creating many chances. They worked hard to thwart Royston's normal effective passing game and forced Paul Attfield's side into a number of uncharacteristic mistakes putting themselves under a lot of unnecessary pressure.
Despite this Town's defence of Danny Apostolos, Matt Pring, David Cain and Jamie Babbage stood relatively firm and were difficult to break down.
Stansted's best two chances fell in the 10 minutes before half time with an angled 16-yard drive flashing just wide and a close range scuffed effort being cleared off the line by Babbage.
Royston looked lively when Luke Robins and Ryan Lockett got on the ball but chances were at a premium in the first period.
Robins did create an excellent chance on 25 minutes when he crossed for Lockett but from six yards out but he couldn't quite get a good enough connection and the effort was well blocked by the keeper.
The second half was more even in terms of possession but both defences were still on top.
The visitors took the lead midway through the half from the penalty spot after Babbage handled a header in the box following a corner, the resulting kick sending Jorden Gibson the wrong way.
However, the home side once again showed their character with an outstanding comeback inspired by man-of-the-match Lockett.
In the 76th minute Lockett pounced on a lobbed ball behind the centre half to unleash an angled 20-yard half-volley across the keeper into the far left corner.
Four minutes later some neat team build up play ended with Lockett's sublime cross finding the head of Robins with the ball flashing into the top corner.
Stansted gambled pushing players forward and pounded long balls into the box and one header with two minutes remaining was superbly tipped over by Gibson for a corner.
The scoring was completed in injury time when youth team player Scott Crosk and Robins linked up well on a quick counter attack to set up an 18 yard effort for Lockett which flew past the visiting keeper.
Royston's reward is a trip to Hoddesdon Town in the second round.
