ASHWELL Academicals entertained local rivals Baldock Town Knights at Smallgains on a drizzly morning on Saturday.

With expectations high on both sides, the game started with early chances being created at both ends.

The score remained level at the break after a lively and closely contested half.

In a tense second half, both teams pressed forward to find a winner.

Ashwell were denied by resolute defending and some inspired form from Baldock's keeper, but with a minute left on the clock and the game heading for a stalemate, Ben Reed found space in a crowded area to fire a low shot through a forest of legs to clinch a hard-fought victory.

Baldock's Lancers gained revenge in the second match when they also claimed a last gasp winner to defeat their hosts by a goal to nil.
