Royston Celtic Greens 5 Letchworth GCE Yellows 2

Under-12s Division Four

IN their first game for five weeks the Greens quickly got into their stride against a Letchworth team which had shown some good form against the better teams in the division but perhaps lacked consistency.

The Greens dominated from the outset with Callum Goodall looking lively up front but it was his strike partner Ian Kuenzi who struck the first blow keeping possession well on the left side of goal before wrong-footing a couple of defenders and calmly slotting the ball home.

The hosts continued to press the Letchworth defence and from a corner Charlie Edwards saw his header cleared off the line and the high-scoring full-back was also just unable to get the final touch on another ball hit across the Letchworth goal.

It seemed only a matter of time before Celtic scored again and Kuenzi got his second with a lovely header from another corner in the 15th minute.

Ollie Green, who demonstrated some good forward support play throughout, was then unlucky just a couple of minutes later not to see his beautifully timed pass across goal turned in by a fellow forward.

However, the home side didn't have to wait long for their third goal when from yet another corner Danny Mynott got his reward for some good attacking work down the right flank by forcing the ball home at the near post.

Letchworth then proved just how dangerous they can be by hitting back within a couple of minutes with a break down the left which caught the home side flat-footed to make the game more of a contest than the one-sided affair which it had threatened to become.

In fact for the next few minutes the visitors had their best spell and it required some good defensive work by Tom McGee to keep them at bay.

Ryan Judge in goal also needed to be on his toes in his busiest period of the match in a game where otherwise he did not have a great deal to do.

The Greens' midfield soon reasserted themselves with Matthew Foley strong on the ball and in the tackle and Robbie Filby showing his stamina with good work both in defence and attack.

It was the latter who put in a superb ball into the visitor's area on 28 minutes where Faheem Jeewoth hit the ball at an awkward angle to score a great fourth goal and give the home side back their three goal cushion.

The second half was a closer affair and both sides looked dangerous at times.

Jordan Cooney was called into action making three good clearances in succession whilst Jack Ison stood up well under a number of challenges and grew in confidence as the match wore on.

At the other end Brandon Hargreaves was creating much of the home side's threat with some good play down the left flank leading to a number of chances for Celtic which no-one could quite finish.

On the other flank Ethan Lewis had switched from full-back to put in a typically bustling performance before going back into defence after an injury for the final part of the game.

Just when it looked as though the second half would remain goalless man-of-the-match Kuenzi struck his third goal with a shot through a crowd of players and then Letchworth broke away almost from the restart to score their second moments before the final whistle.

Team manager Wayne Hargreaves was pleased with the result after a long lay-off and the subbed players' attitude when he gave an extended run out to other players.

He also thought the goals were well worked, some of the passing was good and the players' fitness, whilst not at its best, was still better than that of the visitors.
