Royston Kamaete Schools of Traditional Shotokan Karate (KSTSK) held its ninth annual tournament at the weekend and five of its martial artists won gold medals.

Members representing 15 clubs from around Herts and Beds put on a ‘marvellous’ display in Kumite (sparring) and Kata (Formal Sequence).

Friends and families showed their support as they cheered on everyone throughout the day. Events covered all ages, from age six years Kata, through teenager and adult categories to Black Belt Kata and Kumite.

The popular Family Team (synchronised) Kata event, proved a huge success again with many teams coming forward.

The gold medal winners from Royston were: William Mallen, Gavin Elliott-Turner, Patrick Vallelly, Joseph Vallelly and Kareina Khera. Kareina Khera, William Mallen and Sebastian Bennett won silvers while Jack Lione, William Mallen, Alex Nanda, Joseph Vallelly, Patrick Vallelly, George Whybrow, Henry Whybrow and Ryan Hennighan picked up bronzes.

The high standard and support across all events was noted by Chief Instructor (Sensei) Peter Khera 5th Dan, who teaches at Royston Melbourn and Bassingbourn.

“A particularly high standard of competition Karate this year, especially the teenager and black belt categories. Concentration, focus, etiquette and discipline was maintained throughout the day which was not an easy task for the younger children.”

Sensei Khera is running beginners classes, free trial session, at Royston Leisure Centre (Sundays at 10.30am for adults and juniors aged six years and above), Bassingbourn Sports Centre (Tuesdays 6pm) and Melbourn Sports Centre (Sundays 12pm).
