ROYSTON Golf Club staged its first charity Stableford of the year on Saturday. With a large mixed field of players, it was Adam Woods who won the gents trophy, with an excellent round of 38 Stableford points from his three handicap. Mick Wardman took second place on countback from Tony Hannington and Mark Hill. All three players had 37 points. Carolyn Devaney who pipped Judith Osler by one point won the ladies trophy. The senior section held their March Medal on Wednesday and with some excellent scores, it was John Perkins who won with a net 65 from his 20 handicap. In second place was Peter Mitchell (77-11=66). Third went to Roy Wilson (90-23=67) who pushed Jim Hopkins into fourth place (82-13=69). On a glorious Sunday morning, Keith Cridland and Derek Hayden were victorious in the Greensomes Stableford amassing 42 points. Adrian Shoebridge was once again in the prizes. This time partnered by David Renouf, they finished with 41 points, pushing Trevor Deards and Gary Hainsworth into third place. - A large field turned out for the first men's singles competition of the season at Heydon Grange for the Spray Avia Trophy. While several players got off to very fast starts over the Essex and Cambs courses, gradually the conditions took their toll and many of the halfway challengers succumbed to the blustery conditions. Honours, as always, ended up going to the most consistent players and with Shaun Saward and Ian Goodwin tying for third place on 36 points each, it left Rob Nicoll and Steve Lang to take the top places on 38 Stableford points. With both players scoring 19 points on each nine Nicoll (pictured) just pipped Lang to the title on the basis of count-back over the final six holes.
