A SUCCESSFUL afternoon was held at Melbourn Bowls Club, on Sunday, with the annual Family Triples competition sponsored by the Dodds family.

Despite the humid weather, a lot of good bowls were played and the result was close.

In third place were Keith and Anne Howard, with newcomer to Melbourn Chris Johnson winning two and drawing two of their games.

In second place were the Dodds family themselves - Jacqui, Peter and Robert winning three and drawing one game.

But the team who earned a well-deserved victory were Ann and Ernie Brown with Di Clark, winning all four of their games with some tough matches on the way.

- A good week in the Cambridge & District League saw Melbourn collect two victories in their quest to remain in Division One.

Against fellow strugglers West Wratting, Rod Sell led the way, maintaining an even score until the 12th end when he started to pull away up to a six on the 17th end, only to drop a four on the last but he still had a convincing 23-17 win.

Rink two saw a 19-11 win for Wratting but Melbourn's biggest win was on rink three.

After four ends, Peter Dodds settled his team down and they never looked back, winning 10 of the remaining ends, but they did include three fives and two fours as they romped to a 35-12 win.

Robert Dodds had a difficult time on his rink. He was only able to score two twos and five singles but restricted his opponents to 16 shots as Melbourn completed a 78-64 victory.

The game against Chesterton was a different proposition as they are competing for the top spot in Division One.

On rink one, Robert Dodds again had an evening when his opponents restricted him to only ones and twos on his winning ends but he did the same to them, gaining the edge with a 13-10 win.

Geoff Bridger had another unlucky night as he was drawn against a former Leamington Spa finalist and he and his team were unable to make much impression, slipping to a 21-9 loss.

Rod Sell also had a hard job against a strong team, losing out at the start and then coming back to a four-shot lead at the 15th end, only to lose the last three after an unsuccessful drive on the last, making it a 16-16 draw.

On the last rink, Peter Dodds won 13 ends, 11 of them in singles, but added to a five and a four to win 20-6 and wrap up a 58-53 victory.

There was also success in the Meldreth League for Melbourn as Comberton were hammered 95-40, but they slipped to a 69-27 loss against Foxton in the Foxton League and went down 33-26 in the Business House Pairs League.
