ROYSTON Town have progressed into the next round of the FA Cup after defeat Northampton Spencer in their Preliminary Round replay on Tuesday night.

Chesham United will provide the opposition on Saturday, September 14 in the First Round Qualifying.

On Saturday, The Crows drew 3-3 at Garden Walk, goalscorers were Ryan Mason, Ross Collins and Craig Hammond, meaning a tricky away tie at the United Counties Division One outfit.

And despite going 1-0 down to a 25-yard Paul Pickering strike, Paul Attfield’s side held their nerve to move into the next round.

Mason tied things up with a header from an Adie Cambridge corner, and Ryan Ingrey’s bullet header saw the home side go in 2-1 up.

Spencer never gave up, and Dean Hall levelled things up once more, but with 15 minutes to go, Hammond proved to be the matchwinner converting Ingrey’s pull-back from six yards.

While obviously delighted to progress into the next round, Royston boss Paul Attfield paid tribute to the opposition.

“It was a really, really tough game on the night, if you were watching it would be hard to tell there was two leagues between the teams.

“I felt we were pretty naive on Saturday [first game] but in all fairness to the lads on Tuesday, they worked their socks off so full credit to them.

“But I have to give credit to the opposition, they kept coming at us and they played as though it was their cup final.”

Royston host Daventry Town on Saturday at Garden Walk in the Calor Southern League Division One Central in what is sure to be a real test.

Daventry currently top the pile with five wins in five, and have scored 20 goals so far in the league.

Attfield added: “Daventry are on paper one of the toughest teams to play physically, and they play good football too and are scoring a lot of goals.

“It will be a very, very tough game, but if we showed the same resilience and attacking prowess as we showed last night [Tuesday] then there’s no reason why we can’t get a result.”

One element that is of concern to Attfield is the defence.

Royston are averaging three goals a game, but have also given away goals at the wrong end.

Attfield has admitted to looking at bringing in another defender, but admits that could still be a way off.

“We have looked a little disjointed of late, we still have seven players missing so it’s frustrating for everybody. But the 11 players I put out on Saturday will be strong,” he added.
